HANSHI MCGRATH'S 10 BASIC EXERCISES
Note : to be
used as a supplement to the Isshin-ryu sixteen basic, not as a substitute. The supplemental basics are derived
from kata Bun-Kai and self defense moves that have proven viable over the
decades.
1-
Seisan
stance, left foot forward. Step
forward with right foot, right hand horizontal block, left hand vertical snap
punch to solar plexus, right front snap kick to groin.
2- Seisan stance, left foot forward. Step backward with left foot, throw left vertical snap punch, left front snap kick to pelvis.
3- Seisan stance, left foot forward. Lift and turn both heels, placing feet in a right oblique Seisan, withdraw right foot behind left foot, on ball of the right foot. Chinto block, left fist high, right fist low, then throw right side snap kick to opponent’s pelvis.
4- Seisan stance, left foot forward. Step forward with right foot, right shuto block and grab. Pull opponent toward you, off balance, left elbow strike to opponent’s chin, palm heel to nose with right hand.
5- Seisan stance, with left foot forward. Step forward with the right foot, use right rising block with snap (back of fist to ceiling), throw left back fist to opponent’s nose.
6- Seisan stance, left foot forward. Step into Seiuchin stance with right foot, throw right hand horizontal shuto block to opponent’s punching arm, using same hand to move his arm down and to your right side. As you move the opponent’s arm, throw left ridge hand to opponent’s right lower ribs, snap the left ridge hand back and strike with a right ridge hand to opponent’s neck on left side.
7- Seisan stance, with left foot forward. Step forward with right foot, throw right shuto to opponent’s solar plexus, snap strike back to ready position and throw simultaneous left hand shuto to opponents carotid artery.
8- Seisan stance , with left foot forward. Step forward with right foot, simultaneously, throw a right hand low block. Withdraw the block and simultaneously throw a left and right vertical snap punch to the solar plexus, pause, throw another left and right vertical snap punch, pause, throw a left vertical snap punch. Hands return to hips.
9- Seisan stance
, with left foot forward. Step into Seiuchin stance with the right foot forward.
Throw right hand inside block against opponent’s right hand head punch, throw
a right hand back fist to groin, same hand back fist to opponent’s nose.
10- Seisan
stance, with left foot forward. Step with right foot into Seiuchin stance, throw
a horizontal block, throw a left vertical fist over the block, as the block
pulls back to left side of your body. As left vertical punch is withdrawn, snap
right back fist from it’s position of withdrawal to right side of opponent’s
jaw
